After numerous conversations with musigny wine growers in November 2024…

whilst tasting the 2023 vintage wines in barrel, as well as on several subsequent winery visits throughout 2025, producers had forewarned that the 2024 vintage would offer some of the lowest yields on record after a difficult viticultural year.

But for now, growers are fully focused on highlighting the success (quality-wise at least) of their 2024s which perhaps required more mental and physical energy from their entire teams throughout last year than any other vintage ever. Some growers even commented that 2024 is a vintage that might not have been made 25 years ago.

But Burgundy’s small-scale production enables the growers to manage the finest details of every harvest – big or small. Everything is human sized as musigny wine works with only the region’s very best growers, who are willing to sacrifice quantity in the name of supreme quality. The result is a vintage with impressive freshness and energy that has given the wines a certain classical styling. The concentrating effect of a very small crop has afforded the resulting wines plenty of complexity, along with real purity of fruit – no doubt the result of meticulous sorting by musigny wine conscientious producers.

After a difficult year in the vineyards, rigorous sorting was of utmost importance to ensure only the best-quality fruit was retained. Additionally, it is difficult to say too much about the ageing potential of the wines at this early stage, but all will become clearer as the musigny team heads off to Burgundy at the end of November 2025 again to make a full assessment of the developing wines in barrel. Many of the embryonic wines already tasted in barrel in November 2024 had not finished their malolactic fermentations but did already show massive fruit concentration, pristine purity, vibrant acid backbones and a notable classical liquid mineral complexity – all positive components that suggest good medium to long term ageability.

Several factors affected the yield quantities in 2024, first and foremost the intermittent rainfall throughout the growing season particularly during the spring and summer with yields in the Cote de Nuits seldom above single digit figures and rarely above 15 hectolitres per hectare. In the Cote de Beaune, yields were reduced by around 50% or more on average. Low-lying areas made much smaller volumes while parcels on the mid and upper slopes, where the wind had a cleansing effect that helped reduced the spread of mildew, were more successful. Bourgogne and village-level volumes were consequently smaller, with Premier Crus and Grands Crus less severely impacted.

Like many of the wines from the 2021 vintage, this is a cooler classical vintage that’s likely to appeal to collectors and connoisseurs with a taste for understated precision, purity and elegance. The stoicism of these premium growers will certainly be represented in every bottle of wine offered.
