The Domaine Skouras 2025 Peplo Rose was only recently bottled when I tasted it, yet it already showed terrific results. This is a decidedly gastronomic rose made from Syrah, Mavrofilero and Agiorgitiko, with each variety vinified separately before blending. The Syrah is fermented in stainless steel, the Agiorgitiko in old acacia barrels and the Mavrofilero undergoes skin contact in clay vessels to build color, texture and aromatic nuance. Sourced from vineyards at 550 to 800 meters in elevation, the wine offers freshness and energy alongside a distinctive textural dimension. There is a subtle phenolic bite on the finish and a satisfying sense of volume across the palate, with the oak influence remaining invisible. Founded by George Skouras in 1985 after studying enology in Dijon, Domaine Skouras stands among the pioneering estates that helped define modern Greek wine. Today, the winery is guided by the next generation under Dimitris Skouras, who balances respect for the family’s history with a constant search for innovation. What began in George Skouras’s father’s garage has grown into an estate with 40 hectares of own vineyards with an additional 40 to 50 supervised hectares across the Peloponnese. The estate’s identity is rooted in the extraordinary diversity of the region, from the limestone and clay soils of Nemea to the high-altitude vineyards of Mantinia. Agiorgitiko is the flagship grape, but the winery has also played an important role in elevating Moschofilero (spelled "Moscofilero" on their labels), Assyrtiko, Viognier and other varieties through site-specific bottlings. George Skouras was among the first to plant Viognier in Greece in 1989, and his long-standing connection to France continues to shape the estate’s outlook today. The estate’s commitment to renewal is perhaps best illustrated by projects such as the Labyrinth solera, begun in 1999 and now incorporating 25 vintages of Megas Oenos, alongside ongoing experiments with clay vessels, high-altitude vineyards and future single-vineyard wines.
