Kei is an incredibly talented young man. I was intrigued to meet him as I had heard so much about him from both his contemporaries and peers.

In the summer of 2022, we arranged to meet at a restaurant in Beaune. He was as punctual as his wines are precise and I was delighted to see him clutching three half bottles of his sensational juice from his 2019 vintage for us to taste with dinner.

The wines were gorgeous and I instantly knew that I was in the presence of a superstar. What an incredible story too. He had left Tokyo to travel to New Zealand as he was so interested in pinot noir and chardonnay. After a short spell there and the locals seeing how passionate and talented he was, they told him that he should travel to Burgundy as he was wasting his time in New Zealand as far as they were concerned.

He arrived and worked with Philippe Pacalet ,domaine Rousseau and domaine Roulot. Indeed, his earlier vintages in Beaune were whilst he was still working at Roulot. We agreed to meet again on my next visit. A couple of months later, we met for dinner at the excellent Japanese restaurant in Beaune, Le Benaton, which seemed to be a regular haunt for Kei. They sell his wines, but were delighted to say that they were sold out and that he should bring some more when he next has some to sell. Along with our bottle of Rousseau, we tasted some more of his 2020 vintage…I was  hooked. The wines had a charm and purity that is rarely seen. These wines were not good, but outstanding from village sites, he had produced wines of incredible elegance.

We met again recently and I tasted his 2021’s. They were all without doubt some of the best wines of the vintage, with the Charmes Chambertin in full swing and showing easily to be a perfect 100 score. Elegance., an incredible nose and finish will see most contenders for wine of the year off. Without doubt, this is a masterpiece and is laying down the gauntlet to many others who are seeking  greatness and adulation.

I am very  privileged to represent and  taste at great addresses such as Bizot, Millemann and Arlaud often. Kei is very young, but from his exquisitely small and spotless cellar, he has created 2022’s that people will fight over. He is generous with his wine, warm, hard working and deserves to take his place in the Burgundy hall of fame.

As for the whites..all I can say is wow.  They really took me aback…the silkiness and perfect use of oak just blew me away. These are textbook wines for admirers of the very best in White Burgundy. I will try and keep as many cases of Puligny and Corton Charlemagne 2022 from Kei for myself as I can. I really don’t know how he has crafted these beautifully chiselled masterpieces at such a young age.
