Tasting at Domaine Parent is one of the highlights of Burgundy, with incredibly consistency of concentration, polish, and elegance. The wines are powerful and, combined with a programme of ageing in new oak, are perfect for lovers of Santa Barbara Pinot Noir. Yet they are also firm, traditionally structured and ageworthy, and incredibly ‘correct’ to their terroir, varying across vineyard holdings from silky-soft to deep and rich.

To visit Domaine Parent, you drive south from the regional centre of Beaune, from which Pommard and Volnay stand out as two gorgeous villages nestled off the road to your right. As you park up in Pommard, you cannot fail to immerse yourself in the history of this pretty village. A wickedly tempting chocolate shop sits opposite the main square.

Even so, Pommard is often overlooked by those on pilgrimage to Burgundy’s greatest terroirs due to its lack of Grand Cru vineyards. For savvy buyers this is a blessing as the world’s obsession with Grand Cru continues to escalate, along with pricing. Yet the Premier Cru wines produced by the village’s finest growers such as Anne Parent can eclipse the quality offered by Grand Cru produced in other regions.
