The very word Vosne and Gros are synonymous with Burgundy royalty. They are connected through time, marriage, the passing of generations and the future. Their fortunes are tied together in the magic of their terroir and the younger personalities that will shape the destiny of this famous village, where the Gros family in it’s many different guises proudly display their shiny plaques at their entrances.

As you enter this sleepy village, you pass probably the most famous and expensive wine producer’s house in the village…Jean Yves Bizot, complete with chickens in the front. You then turn left just before reaching DRC and you enter the golden stretch of the village. This really is a simple village road, with large fortress like houses which is practically monopolised by the Gros family, …cousins in abundance.

Michel Gros developed a wonderful reputation for producing earthy, rich full flavoured wines…very much wines of their time, with the wines being robust and animal in style. This has all changed considerably, since his son Pierre has fully taken over at the estate. Piere himself, still not thirty years of age, is elegant. charming, well-educated and has his finger on the pulse when it comes to what modern day Burgundy afficionados are looking for. The wines have taken on a completely different style, and he seems to be coping with global warming brilliantly.

The 2019’s have been a revelation. Super silky, fine, pure …all those words that are used often loosely, really do apply here. The Chambolle village is a dream of a wine in 2020 and 2021, with the Clos des Reas and Vosne Romanee aux Brulee finally taking their own position as Burgundy standouts. This is very much work in progress as Pierre will continue to turn heads as he gets more vintages under his belt. It’s difficult for many grower’s children to step into big family shoes. Pierre seems to have embraced the great work carried out by his father and taken the domaine onto a different level. A domaine that is modern in style, with a very clear message. We are a great name with a clear future. Thus, we are relevant, innovative, and capable of producing finesse. These really are wines that make you smile. From the humble everyday wines which are full of cherry fruit to their grand cru, …this is a domaine that is still well priced with lots to offer going forward.
