A morning tasting with Cyprien Arlaud is always something to look forward to.
On a crisp November day, Greg Sherwood MW and I visited the domaine to taste his masterful 2023s, a vintage that speaks of generosity, precision, and conviction. The cellar was full of barrels, the work in the winery nearly complete, and the atmosphere one of quiet confidence.
Years of unwavering commitment to organic farming and a team that approaches the Négociant cuvées with the same care and determination as the Domaine wines have clearly paid off in 2023. The wines display beautiful, opulent flavours and remarkable purity, each one a testament to Cyprien’s meticulous touch and the domaine’s holistic philosophy.
Quality across Burgundy in 2023 may have varied, but every wine we tasted at Arlaud was absolutely pinpoint. These are wines of harmony, depth, and finesse, unmistakably shaped by Cyprien’s devotion to his craft. Anecdotes from Burgundy often reveal the quiet greatness behind its producers. As a young man, Cyprien would watch Aubert de Villaine, of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, cycling daily to his vineyards, a humble image that left a deep impression.
“One day, I will do the same,” he thought. Decades later, de Villaine himself remarked to a respected merchant, “One of the people I respect most in Burgundy is Cyprien Arlaud.
He has worked tirelessly in his vineyards and uplifted all the Côte de Nuits.”
